The Alby opens in Woden with pinball and pool tables | The Canberra Times

news, latest-news,

Has Canberra just got its very own version of the Cheers bar, a place where everybody knows your name? The Alby opened in Woden on Thursday with everything from beer garden to Australia’s first Duckpin bowling to pinball machines and poker machines. The new local is on the ground floor of the Albemarle building, which was developed by the Doma Group, off Furzer Street in Woden. It comprises a space across two floors, including the basement, covering close to 1000 square metres, in a design by Capezio Copeland. Opening hours will be Wednesday to Sunday 11am until late. The Alby encompasses bars, chef’s table for private dining, beer garden, games basement with bar and food offering, Australia’s first Duckpin bowling, pinball, pool tables and more. Duckpin bowling is a ten pin game popular throughout Canada and the United States. It uses smaller-sized ball without finger holes and three bowls are allowed per frame. The Alby is also a place to play the pinnies. It has five of pinball machines including the “hard to come by” Guns N’ Roses limited edition. The basement features three 85-inch HD TVs along with other 55-inch TVs to capture all the action. The Alby’s manager Mike Kadinski was excited on Friday afternoon, watching the pub fill with an easy-going after-work crowd. Things were going well one day in. “It’s been very well received,” he said. “It’s got a nice after-work vibe at the moment. It’ll probably have a bit more energy later on tonight.” The Duckpin bowling should be ready to play on Tuesday, with some last-minute technical issues being ironed out over the weekend.
