Morrison broadcasts multi-billion greenback funding in new helicopter fleet


Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced that the Royal Australian Navy will acquire new helicopters to replace the current fleet of Taipans. 

“Today, we're announcing that the Royal Australian Navy will acquire an additional 12 MH-60R Romeo maritime helicopters for the Navy, and they’ll be based here at Albatross,” Mr Morrison said. 

“This will replace the Navy’s current fleet of six Taipan helicopters, and we will acquire an additional 13th Romeo to replace the loss of a Romeo in The Philippine Sea in October 2021.”
 
Of the $2.5 billion investment, Mr Morrison said $1.5 billion would go towards the acquisition of the helicopters with $1 billion for the ongoing sustainment of the fleet.  

“That is expected to add to the 200 direct jobs right here that is already sustaining the fleet that we have by another 90 jobs,” he said.
