Former British Commander Richard Kemp has assessed what Russian President Vladimir Putin's future plans may possibly be in Ukraine and abroad.

Colonel Kemp spoke to Sky News Australia, discussing the latest events unfolding in Eastern Europe.

"I think probably Eastern Ukraine and the whole of the coast of Ukraine is probably what he wants out of Ukraine initially," he said.

"But he may want more.

"And certainly, I think he would want more elsewhere."

Colonel Kemp said President Putin would probably "push for some kind of aggression" in the Baltic states "if he has the chance".

"This obviously threatens NATO and really threatens the prospect of nuclear war," he said.
