David Klemmer sent off, Daniel Suluka-Fifita, Latrell Mitchell, Knights vs Rabbitohs, Round 17

Knights enforcer David Klemmer is facing a suspension after being sent off for an elbow to the face of Souths forward Daniel Suluka-Fifita, which sparked an all-in melee.

Klemmer was involved in a scuffle moments earlier with Souths forward Keaon Koloamatangi and appeared to take out his frustrations Suluka-Fifita in the final play of the game, which Souths won 40-28.

The Newcastle prop made a beeline for Suluka-Fifita and appeared to elbow him on the ground before Latrell Mitchell ran in to pull Klemmer off his teammate.

“Now he is losing his way David Klemmer,” Dan Ginnane said on Fox League.

“Now it is starting to become a little bit ugly here and there is a few players on both sides with short fuses.”

Steve Roach believes Mitchell should have been sent for 10 minutes in the sin bin after running in.

“So has Latrell Mitchell, who has run in and pulled him off the Souths player there,” Roach said.

Referee Todd Smith separated both teams before calling out Klemmer and sending him off.

“It is reckless contact on the ground directly to the head, you’re off,” Smith said.

“Oh my goodness David Klemmer has been marched,” Ginnane said.

“A sensational to end this game.”

Roach believes Klemmer was hard done by being sent off for the incident.

“I think it was the work on the ground with the forearm, but that’s not a send-off,” Roach said.

“Latrell Mitchell should go for 10. I know it is the end of the game. You can’t run in and do that.”

Ginnane noted that a reckless charge carries a lengthy suspension if upheld by the match review committee.

“Reckless is a big charge,” Ginnane said.

“What am i meant to do?!” – Latrell | 00:36

“That carries a number of weeks if it holds with the match review committee.

“What a bizarre end to the game.”

Cooper Cronk believes Klemmer overstepped the mark and will have to deal with the consequences of his actions.

“First it was Klemmer and Koloamatangi they had a bit of a dust-up and a scuffle,” Cronk said.

“They weren’t backing down from one another and it led to the next play-the-ball.

“This is David Klemmer over the top of Suluka-Fifita.

“Honestly, David Klemmer stepped over the edge. Game was gone. They are not going to fight back. He has a little scuffle with Koloamatangi just before and he just took it too far.

“He went for aggression. He went for contact. Then there was a little elbow that fell on the head as he went down.

“He is lucky he didn’t sit that elbow on the head, but he didn’t have to do it. It was unnecessary so he will get looked at. It sort of missed and slid off, but he didn’t have to do it.”

Benji Marshall believes Klemmer plays the game on the edge and the incident was the result of his frustration getting the better of him.

“It was interesting hearing the referee say it was reckless contact to the head because reckless carries a pretty fair charge,” Marshall said.

“He is probably lucky that his elbow did slip over the top because if that stays on then it is probably a lot worse than what it was.

“But that’s emotion and that’s what happens on the back of flare-ups and a scuffle with Koloamatangi just before that.

“But it carried on into that tackle. Klemmer is one of those players that lives on the edge. The eyes roll into the back of the head and he wanted a piece of it and he got it.

“He came in and he got sent off for it.”
